Intent

We aim to deliver engaging, practical, and discrete Geography lessons that enhance children’s understanding of the world they live in and the impact of human activities on our planet. Our goal is to ensure a clear progression through a thoughtfully planned and logically sequenced curriculum. Additionally, we emphasise cross-curricular learning to enrich students’ comprehension of the interconnected aspects of geography across the curriculum.

Implementation

We recognise that new knowledge needs to connect with prior knowledge to be retained so we teach Geography through key substantive concepts: Locational Knowledge, Place Knowledge, Human and Physical Geography, Geographical skills and Fieldwork. Regular opportunities are provided for geographical fieldwork and investigations, whether this is through educational visits or utilising the school’s local context, West Wood, where children can observe, record, measure, analyse and reflect on real experiences.

  • Key Knowledge progression (including vocabulary) all children must master and apply in lessons
  • A cycle of lessons for each subject, which carefully plans for progression and depth concentrating on the geographical skills suited to the age group
  • Flashbacks, which are used regularly to support learners’ ability to retrieve and recall knowledge and increase space in the working memory
  • Sticky Triggers for pupils to apply their learning in a philosophical/open manner
  • Trips and visiting experts who will enhance the learning experience
  • Appropriate curriculum themed home learning tasks which children complete with adults at home

Impact

  • Children develop substantive and disciplinary knowledge in Geography which enables them to explore, navigate and understand the world around them (locally and worldwide) and consider their impact upon it.
  • Children know more and remember more through making meaningful connections and can apply their geographical knowledge in context.
  • Children know how their actions can affect the environment and can say how they support sustainability
  • Our curriculum equips children for success to become competent geographers in secondary education and beyond.
