PSHE

Intent

At Westwood Academy we aim to:

  • Give children the knowledge and attributes they need to manage life’s changes and make the most of life’s opportunities.
  • Equip children to understand how they develop personally and socially over time.
  • Expose and give children the skills to tackle moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
  • Enable our children to learn about rights and responsibility and appreciate what it means to be a member of society.
  • Encourage our children to develop a sense of self-worth by contributing the school life and the wider community.

Implementation

We deliver our PHSE curriculum through weekly discrete lessons as well as covering key themes through whole school assemblies, class assemblies, computing and science lessons.

PSHE at Westwood provides opportunities, addresses current experiences and prepare for the future in the following areas:

  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Relationships
  • Living in the Wider World

Impact

By the time children leave Westwood, they will:

  • Build on their skills acquired during the Early Years Foundation Stage to develop effective relationships, assume greater personal responsibility and manage personal safety, including online safety.
  • Have explicit and implicit learning opportunities and experiences which reflect pupils’ increasing independence and physical and social awareness.
  • Have an understanding of the three core themes: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World
  • Develop their current knowledge and experiences as well as preparing for their future.
  • Be equipped to manage the physical and emotional changes at puberty, having an introduction them to a wider world which will enable them to make an active contribution to their communities.
